[서울=플러스코리아 타임즈 임영원기자] 세계 각국 언론이 한국의 ‘안녕들 하십니까’ 열풍을 주목하고 있는 가운데 글로벌 보이스가 ‘안녕들 하십니까’라는 질문 대신 ‘안녕하지 못합니다’라는 답을 제목에 인용하며 이 열풍이 한국 버전의 ‘월가를 점령하라(Occupy Wall Street)인가?’라고 물어 눈길을 끌고 있다.

글로볼 보이스는 ‘사회적 불평등과 현 정치의 전개 상황에 대한 한 대학생의 좌절감을 손으로 써내려간 대자보는 한국의 온라인과 오프라인에 열풍처럼 퍼졌다’며 ‘다양한 사회이슈를 적어 내려가며 그것으로 인해 “우리는 안녕하지 못하다”고 말하는 “안녕하지 못합니다”로 알려진 대자보에 영향을 받아 한국의 젊은층들이 자신들 나름의 대자보를 써서 학교 내 게시판을 도배하기 시작했다’고 전했다.

‘We Are Not Fine!’ Posters Go Viral at South Korea's Universities

A handwritten poster by a university student that spelled out the student's frustration with social injustice and current political developments went viral, both on- and offline in South Korea. Inspired by this so-called “We are not fine” poster, which lists various social issues as the reason why “we are not fine”, young Koreans have started writing their own posters and plastering campus bulletin boards with their messages.

사회적 불평등과 현 정치의 전개 상황에 대한 한 대학생의 좌절감을 손으로 써내려간 대자보는 한국의 온라인과 오프라인에 열풍처럼 퍼졌다. 다양한 사회이슈를 적어 내려가며 그것으로 인해 “우리는 안녕하지 못하다”고 말하는 “안녕하지 못합니다”로 알려진 대자보에 영향을 받아 한국의 젊은층들이 그들 자신의 대자보를 써서 학교 내 게시판을 도배하기 시작했다.

Ju Hyun-woo, a student at Korea University, wrote the message below on two large pieces of paper and posted them on his school bulletin board last week. Ju's manifesto listed major social issues that ignited protests, including the presidential election manipulation scandal; mass layoffs of railroad workers; the struggle of small town Milryang's senior residents against the construction of a high voltage tower; the corrutpion of powerful corporations; and the ever-crunched and insecure job market.

지난주 고대 학생 주현우는 아래의 메세지를 커다란 종이 두 장에 적어 학교 게시판에 붙였다. 주씨의 대자보는 대선불법개입, 철도파업자 직위해제, 작은 마을 밀양 어르신들의 고압 송전탑 건설반대 고투, 막강한 대기업들의 비리, 아주 좁고 불안한 취업시장 등을 포함, 시위를 유발시켰던 중요한 사회적 문제를 나열했다.

He then called on fellow students: “I just want to ask you, ‘Are you okay?’ Are you fine with ignoring all these issues because they are not your problems? I just wanted to ask whether you feel okay about hiding behind political apathy to justify yourself. And if you are not ‘fine’ after seeing all these problems, then voice your opinions – whatever that may be”. 

그리고 그는 동료학생들에게 “저는 다만 묻고 싶습니다. 안녕하시냐고요. 남의 일이라 외면해도 문제없으신가, 혹시 ‘정치적 무관심’이란 자기합리화 뒤로 물러나 계신 건 아닌지 여쭐 뿐입니다. 만일 안녕하지 못하다면 소리쳐 외치지 않을 수 없을 겁니다. 그것이 무슨 내용이든지 말입니다.”

Following the explosive reaction on campus to the poster, it has spread like wildfire [ko] to universities across the country. More than 20 major universities within and outside of Seoul have joined so far, including Seoul National University, Yonsei, Hanyang, Ewha, KAIST, Pusan University, and many more. Even a student at University of California at Berkley in the United States and some high school students have followed suit (see photos below).

폭발적인 반응에 이어 대자보는 전국의 대학가로 들불처럼 순식간에 퍼져나갔다. 현재까지 서울대, 연대, 한양대, 이화여대, 카이스트, 부산대, 그리고 그외 많은 대학들 등 서울과 그외 지역에 있는 20여개의 대학교가 동참했다. 또한 미국 버클리 캘리포니아대학교의 한 학생과 몇몇 고교생들도 이에 동참했다 (아래 사진 참조).

A Facebook page titled “Can't Be Okay” [ko] was set up to share the flood of photos. In a week, it has received 262,000 likes, and Ju's poster, which started the movement, has earned more than 2,000 likes and been shared more than 440 times. Several journalists analyzed [ko] the reason why the poster has become so popular with students, concluding that it is because the poster isn't a political statement from certain interest groups, but is a “frank personal statement written in conversational language by a fellow student” who shares the pain and frustration of young, struggling Koreans.

몇몇 언론인들이 왜 대자보가 학생들사이에서 그토록 인기가 있는지 이유를 분석한 결과 대자보는 특정 이익 그룹의 정치적 입장선언이 아니고, 힘들게 살아가는 젊은 한국인들의 고통과 좌절을 함께 느끼는 "동료학생이 대화 형식으로 쓴 진솔한 개인적 입장표명이기 때문"이라고 결론을 내렸다.

At Sookmyung Women's University. From one end to the other are “We are not fine” posters. Someone wrote over there, “I wasn't able to sleep till late at night, after reading these posters”. It seems like something about these posters has deeply resonated with students.

After the concept went viral, Korea University decided to preserve [ko] Ju's poster at the university museum and introduce it as “a doc-ument of a democratic movement”.

대자보가 열풍처럼 퍼져나간 후, 고려대학교는 주씨의 대자보를 대학교 박물관에 보존하기로 결정했고 이것을 "민주화 운동의 기록"이라고 소개했다.
